SUCH IS the case with the (oods Cross soccer club. Now entering their third year of '.arsity competition the Wildcat Wild-cat are settling a few scores 9 m had along the way. A lew wins would be a gross understatement of this team, iready they have established lemselves as a top club. This ear lor the first time in soccer there will be a state i wnament in both the 3A ajdthe 4A ranks. WOODS CROSS would have : tote a strong contender for k 3A crown with their main challenge coming from Jor-an Jor-an who gained most of the Merest team of a year ago. Coach Kevin Rigby is op-i op-i onistic about his club's dwe in the state, the first ask is qualifying for that sent and currently the Cats re second in league action ilk one loss to league-lead-8 Bountiful. Already they I n victories over Viewmont, i Mfc Skyline and Murray. WOODS CROSS counts on two players in goal with seniors Chuck Banford and Jeff Athman splitting the time. Chuck was the varsity keeper a year ago. The fullbacks combine youth with experience as the Cats have two seniors and a couple of sophomores in the lineup. Danny Donahue and Gregg Buttars are the seniors with the experience while Jon Lee and Jeff Maughn are the underclassmen. THE HALFBACK line is headed up by junior Harve Omara who has been a big clog in the Wildcat soccer program since arriving at the school two years ago. Alongside Along-side him are seniors Paul Lane and Chris Hansen with sophomore Jay Barber. Senior Louis Castillo is the top goal getter for the Cats. He scored four goals in the win over Viewmont. Louis has everything to make a great forward in regards to speed, control and a good shot. ALONGSIDE of him on the forward line are senior Mike Volgcl, junior Mark Hawkins and sophomore Paul Nest-man. Nest-man. These four are good at their job, scoring goals, in then- first four matches they poured in seventeen goals. Top reserves for the Wild- cats are senior Kelly Wee, junior Shawn Tibbitts and sophomore Mike Overton. THE CATS have a perfect blend of the old and the new. Although many of their players are sophomores; they, have played soccer in the youth programs throughout the area. Woods Cross could very easily bring home the state title for 3A schools this year. And it could possibly only be the beginning of a long dynasty. |
