Show Young Pitchers By PETE FRITCHIE New manager Les Moss of the Detroit Tigers thinks he-has he-has the young arms to provide his club good pitching, with or without Mark Fidrych. "Of course, he's the big one if his arm is sound," Moss says. "HE HASN'T thrown hard yet (this was mid-March) and I won't rush him. We're going to score some runs, so if the pitching is right we could be right in the eastern division race. Moss is hopeful that newly-acquired newly-acquired Jerry Morales will give him a solid hitting third outfielder, along with Ron LeFlore and Steve Kemp. His infield is among the best, tops in doubles plays in 1978 and all four good hitters. His catching is strong with young, outstanding Lance Parrish backed by Milt May and John Wockenfuss. "I'VE SAID all along we'll be in the race this year, with this young club," Moss said. "And there's a good chance we'll be in with or without any one pitcher." Moss has in mind Kip Young, who made the club last year and posted a 2.81 e.r.a., plus this year's high hope, Sheldon Burnside, plus Dave Rozema, Jack Billingham, Milt Wilcox, Steve Baker and, hopefully Fidrych. There's also Jack Morris, Pat Underwood and -Dan Petry, with a chance to come through. |
