Show ofroitt: TEie Team To VJateh TEiio Year By PETE FRITCHIE A team to watch this year, in the Yankee's own eastern A.L. division, is Detroit. Last year Ralph Houk thought he had the potential of a con-tender-and then Mark Fidrych's arm turned lame, again. IF THE Bird's arm is all right this year, the Tigers could be the new-look team of the league. Boston, without Tiant, can't be too much stronger. New York alone could be overwhelming. The Tigers picked up Jerry Morales to plug an outfield weakness and now have a solid club. After mat, Dave Rozema, Jack Billingham and Milt Wilcox can help. If Sheldon . Burnside, Jack Murphy, Jack Morris, Kip Young (great in 1978), Pat Underwood or Dave Tobik turn into major winners, the pitching could be i quite good. THE TIGERS have the hitters, hit-ters, and most are young. Detroit opens the season April 5, at home, with Texas. The spring exhibition schedule opens March 8 against Boston, Bos-ton, at Lakeland. They have a new manager, Les Moss, who brought most of these youngsters along in the farm system. With Jason Thompson, Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker in the infield in-field the Bengals have three outstanding young comers. The catching is strong, with Milt May and upcom Lance Parrish 01iH( ' IN THE outfield vW t not deep, the Tieei t T ch LeFlore, Stevl : Ke towte Rusty suub .!!! :of the best DH's in thl I So the pitching, ifshl881". put th,s club .ntoihfJ year.
