HOWARD THORPE Date Nut Bread Lunch Favorite Altnougn she's one of the best cook's we know, Mrs. Howard Thorpe doesn t spend all of her time cooking. She does a lot of community service and club work and in between sings at many socials and, church and civic entertainments. Her family and friends vouch for her good cooking and when she entertains, guests are assured of good food. One of her favorite recipes ia Date Nut Bread. ' It's delicious with salad or other lunch dishes. DATE NUT BREAD Remove pits from one pound of dates Soak for 15 minutes in 1 cups of boiling milk. To this add 1 teaspoonful soda, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 cup sugar, 2 cups flour sifted with 1 teaspoonful Baking Powder and teaspoonful teaspoon-ful salt. Add 1 teaspoonful vanila and if desired, add cup nut meats. Bake in moderate oven (about 350 degrees) one hour. To add interest to her recipes and beauty to her cupboard, Mrs. Thorpe, incidentally, has a hobby that of collecting teacups and many of the more than two dozen which she has already, are gifts which friends have brought or sent from far away.. Mrs. Thorpe's recipe is another in a series which the Herald has run each week since early this spring, the good cook's names having been suggested by readers. |
