Show REPORT INDICATES CHILD LABOR LAW VIOLATED IN UTAH j SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 18 I Employment of under age minors is still" prevalent in Utah, it was announced here today by John R. Dille, regional director of the Wage and Hour and Public Contracts Con-tracts divisions, U. S. Department Depart-ment of Labor, in the eight Western West-ern states. The fiscal year report shows violations of the child labor sections sec-tions of The Fair Labor Standards Act (Federal wage and hour law) and the Walsh-Healey (public contracts) Act .were uncovered in nearly 20 per cent of the Utah establishments inspected during the twelve months ending July 1, Director Dille said. "The federal wage and hour law prohibits employment of children under 16 years old in manufacturing manufac-turing or processing occupations, or in rooms where manufacturing or processing is being carried on," he added. "It also bans employment of children under 18 years old in occupations oc-cupations declared to be hazardous, hazard-ous, including such jobs as driver or helper on motor vehicles, in logging or sawmilling operations, coal mining, operating power-driven wood-working machinery and operating power-driven hoisting apparatus, including elevators. "The Walsh-Healey Act, which applies to firms supplying goods or materials to the government on contracts exceeding $10,000,. prohibits pro-hibits a boy under 16 or a girl under 18 years old from working on such goods." |
