Show PROPOSED CHANGE ' i WOULD CANCEL 'GRANDADDY' LICENSE The state tax commission would be given power to cancel so-called "granddaddy" drivers' licenses under a proposed state traffic law amendment advanced Friday by the traffic division of the Utah Safety council. Division members discussed proposed pro-posed legislation to be presented to the 1949 legislature at a meeting meet-ing in the capitol. The group also favored elimination elimina-tion of slogans from Utah's 1948 license plates and unanimously backed legislation lowering of driving age limit to youths who have been certified as successfully completing a driver's training course. Outlines Proposal Under the licensing amendment, approved by the division, the tax commission could, in its discretion, revoke or cancel any driver's license not containing a specified expiration date. These licenses, popularly known as "granddaddy" permits were issued without driving driv-ing examinations in 1933 and 1934. The commission could cancel these licenses at any time within five years after the effective date of the amendment. The bill also would lengthen the terms of non-granddaddy permits from the present three-years to five years, and would repeal the now-defunct chapter requiring the commission to recognize armed services licenses as valid in Utah. George H. Lowe, council president, presi-dent, presented the motion asking that slogans be eliminated from Utah license plates. He pointed out that the purpose ..of plates was identification only, and extraneous material, such as slogans detracted from their visibility. |
