Show COMMENTS By Guy Stevens Without a doubt, the American League pennant race is one of the greatest in baseball history.. Never before have four teams found themselves bunched up so close .this late in the season. With Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York and ' Boston in a four-way battle for top position, teams have been shifting around almost on a daily basis. That's the sort of race fans like one that keeps interest at fever pitch. If players don't buckle under the strain, the mad tussle may continue right down the homestretch. It's certainly a far cry from last year's pennant chase when the Yankees finished on top twelve games ahead of Detroit. While the struggle in the National Nat-ional League is not quite so hot, it's still a sizzling old battle. Six teams, Boston,. Brooklyn , St. Louis, New York, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, are very much in the race although right now it ' seems that the pennant winner will be one of the first four mentioned. For sheer excitement and interest, fans will have to admit that this has turned out to be a great year in both leagues. The terrific pace in the American Amer-ican League has made Cleveland just about the hottest baseball town ever seen in the majors. Games on six consecutive playing days drew a total of, 345,000 customers cus-tomers more than the St. Louis Browns attracted all last season. In 50 home games, the Indians have averaged over 34,000 ner game. At that rate they should pass the attendance record of 2,-309,029 2,-309,029 established . by the New York Yanks in 1946. Coach Frank Leahy of the All Stars will have seventy of the greatest players in collegiate football foot-ball on hand for the All Star-Chic-' ago Cardinals ' clash in Soldier Field Friday night. It was Leahy who guided the AH Stars to a sensational sen-sational 16 to 0 win over the Chicago Chic-ago Bears last year. In 1946, the All Stars defeated the Los Angeles Rams also by a 16 to 0 score. Maybe this "16 to 0" score the college boys seem to like will get to be a . habit. Johnny . Lujack, Notre Danre"s flash quarterback, will be in the lineup so the All Stars may crash through for their third consecutive victory. |
