Show BUMBLEBEES AID APPLE ORCHARDS A bumblebee, just bumbling along, and not out to set any records, will spread enough pollen in an apple orchard in an hour to produce nine bushels of apples. So says E. J. Rasmussen, University Univer-sity of New Hampshire fruit expert ex-pert who says the bee squats on the blossoms at least 1,800 times per hour. That's 30 squats a minute, or one blossom every two seconds, in case you're interested. Rasmussen also declares that the honeybee gets credit for the bumblebee's work. Furthermore, he told New Hampshire apple growers, dandelions, rather than bad weather, are responsible for small sets of fruit. When both dandelions and apples bloom at the same time, the dandelions get the bees and the apples are neglected. ' . i |
