Show DAVIS COUNTY TRACK MEET jv Who's Best 5 Teams Find Out Thiirsdaj By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports LAYTON - There is always room for debate de-bate in the county in regards to who has the best team in certain sports. In football some Davis County schools don't play all the others so it's hard to say. Same is true of several other sports, including basketball. BUT THE track and field people leave nothing no-thing open for debate since they conduct an annual meet featuring the six schools from Davis County in one track meet. That annual event takes place this Wednesday Wednes-day and Thursday, March 30 and 31 on the Layton High track. Field events get things underway each day beginning at 12:30 p.m. with the running events starting at 1 p.m. on each day. VIEWMONT coach Lynn DuBois has little doubt in picking his pre-meet favorite and he points the finger of fate right at Clearfield. "They have a great program up there and their depth in all the events is great. It's funny because be-cause it's very possible that Viewmont will have the most individual champions but the Falcons will win the team title. Viewmont and Davis will have a real fight for second place." Predicting this event is tough for two reasons. First of all it's early in the year and the only thing the meet can be judged on is past performances. And secondly many of these teams will be running in their first meet in this one. Mother Nature has been on a tear this spring and not many, if any, .of the six schools have held an official meet. EVEN WITH those two drawbacks Coach DuBois sat down and outlined some of the top performers in each event that he's aware of. Here's a quick run down on the meet. SPRINTS: Junior Jon Warner of Viewmont has been the top gun in the state during the indoor season and he's the top candidate at this meet. If the baseball players are able to run then Viewmont's Kurt Mathews will be another sprinter to watch. Trying to catch these two will be Dean Foulger and Rob Henderson Hen-derson of Clearfield, Brad Lynn of Woods Cross, Jeff Hammer of Davis and Phil Johnson from Layton. The sprints are so quick and short that both the 100 and 200 meters will be close. 400 METERS: Clearfield should own this event with Bubba Conley and Ricky Smith carrying their colors. Tom McDonough of Viewmont could surprise some people while Layton could enter Myron Cooper in this event which would make things interesting to say the least. 800 METERS: This is probably the race that Layton will send their ace Myron Cooper into. He's one of the best in the state although Del pa Espinoza of Davis and Dirk Barlow of Cleae field will definitely battle him for top spot ibiy 1600 METERS: This could be one of the beif's, events of the meet. Most of the schools hav some good long distance runners but the one tg L beat would probably be Mike Allen of Viewic mont. Others who will push him are Dan Dn"e' miller of Bountiful, Bill Wilcox of Clearfielc'1-V Larry Richardson of Woods Cross and Ke fj Hirschi of Davis. 3200 METERS: This might be Drumiller's of Bountiful, best event and he could prove tf ' be first. Viewmont will come at teams will Allen, Brian Fuller and Rees Kidman witW Clearfield looking to Bill Wilcox and Glen Coy f It's in these two races, the long ones, that th newcomers can make their presence felt There is probably a sophomore or junior in on of these schools that will surprise everyon with a high finish. HURDLES: Viewmont s Dave Chowen ha0ui been on a tear on the indoor circuit and Miie looks strong, along with Troy Hanks of ViewW mont and Robert Sherwood of Clearfield. IiIQ the intermediate hurdles the Vikes look fa1 senior Rob Moon to battle for top honors. j, RELAYS. If everyone is able to run the&i Viewmont will win the sprint relay, Clearfieli will win the 1600 meter event while Davis anw Viewmont will probably battle in the medle'1" -'ay- S POLE VAULT: Clearfield is strong here with' Lane Fishburn and Todd Blair both in the 1 foot range. r HIGH JUMP: Again Cooper of Layton ii strong here along with Kirk Tidwell and Tern Gren of Viewmont. Greg Houskeeper oJAi Woods Cross could surprise people. BR LONG JUMP: Senior R.J. Lunt of View5 mont has gone around 21 feet and is odds oi favorite to win although teammate Georgqj( Eames will be right there. ,w : n DISCUS: J.C. VonCollin of Clearfield i tough to beat in this event but Lance Eden o'f Woods Cross, Doug Ferrel of Bountiful ant Doug Holyhock of Clearfield are after him. ,'v, .-at SHOT: No contest here as VonCollin wilso win with Dave Titensor of Viewmont and Kero Finsher of Woods Cross fighting for second: e VonCollin is the tops in the state not just the3' county. JAVELIN: A strong point of the Viking tearr-this tearr-this year with seniors Scott Hubbard and Marl Law rated as a couple of the best around. It will be a great showplace for the counU schools and some of the best tracksters in tht state will be involved. fl |
