Show Deer? A Nnismce - The deer in Farmington are becoming a real nuisance to the drivers and to property owners who are having shrubs, trees and early spring growth ruined. ON TUESDAY of last week at 6 a.m. Louise Mecham tot-laed tot-laed the van she was driving to work. This happened when a deer dashed out of the roadside area toward her car. She swerved to avoid the animal but her car went out of control , hit a telephone pole and slid into a house along the road, at 1500 South and 200 East in the south part of Farmington. The deer escaped without being hit, but Louise received a slight concussion and was in shock with minor cuts on her face. THE FAMILY feels that if more deer crossing signs and lower speed limits were posted along that area, drivers might be more aware of the deer crossing in that area, both early ear-ly mornings and at night, and even in daylight hours. The deer come down into Farmington from the souih part of town to areas in the north. BERNARD and Alice Johnson John-son who live at 445 North Main have a severe problem with the deer and Alice reported that just a few days ago, Mr. Johnson John-son had chased about 25 of the animals off their yard and garden gar-den surrounding the home, sometimes during the daytime hours. At the Johnson home, they have eaten grape vines, dug up the onions, carrots and parsnips pars-nips still in the ground, ruining them all. A year ago the animals anim-als ate the strawberries and plants and the new growth and buds on the rose bushes, also eating the young fruit trees. AT NIGHT the deer will often scrape themselves on the side of the house, waking the family. Other property owners have reported that the braver animals anim-als will even come onto the porches to nibble at shrubs and vines. They destroy many arbor vitae trees, reaching as high as they can reach to eat the twigs. Many mis-shapen trees may be seen around the town. ANOTHER resident said the deer often come right to her window where there are green plants inside the window and she has wondered if they might break a window to get at thi green plants. Many spring blooms, tulip; ,c and others have been eaterl right down to the ground, ofter destroying the bulbs as the) dig them up. IF THERE is any way tf keep the deer from destroying-plantings destroying-plantings and to make driver; more aware of the problem,! when driving in the area, then! something should be done. It has been said that placing human hair in areas where the deer eat, keeps them away, but! some residents found that did! not work either, kj m |
