"- x X v " x k i !w X NANCY BISHOP Ma Bell Aids Those Who Lost Their Voice Mountain Bell has introduced intro-duced an improved version of the Bell System's electronic larynx a device for persons who have lost the use of their vocal chords. THE REDESIGNED model incorporates several new features fea-tures and improvements designed de-signed to bring about improved performance and lower battery bat-tery costs. The new model - the 5C -- is priced at $92, and is being offered at cost, according to Barbara Graham, an assistant staff manager in the Mountain Bell-Utah Public Relations Department. IN ADDITION, Western Electric, which manufactures the new mocl, is offering a $30 credit to persons who have an earlier model ( A or 5B) and wish to exchange it for a new 5C. The trade-in program runs from March 1, 1983 to March 1, 1984 and will reduce the price of the 5C to $62. Developed by Bell Laboratories, Labor-atories, the artificial larynx was first offered by Mountain Bell in 1960. It is designed for persons who have lost their voices through surgical removal re-moval of the larynx or paralysis para-lysis of the vocal chords. It substitutes electronic vibrations vib-rations for the natural vibrations vibra-tions of the voice. Sound is produced when the hand-held unit is placed against the throat and activated as the person speaks. "THE NEW model contains solid-state components and runs on a single nine-volt battery," bat-tery," Graham says. "A nine-volt nine-volt battery is less expensive and more widely available than the mercury cells used in the two earlier models. "The 5C model also has a single off-on switch and an adjustable ad-justable pilch control -- thcre- by permitting the user to select a preferred tone." THE 5C is under warranty by Western Electric to the original ori-ginal purchaser for one year, during which Western will repair re-pair or replace the unit through Mountain Bell at no charge. In addition, a new uniform warranty date has been established estab-lished for the earlier models. All existing 5A and 5B models, regardless of their purchase date, have a uniform one-year warranty running from March 1, 1983 to March 1, 1984. During Dur-ing that period, repairs on the older units will be made at no charge with a proof of purchase. pur-chase.
