Show : The Air Force announced that logistics systems management for an integrated integrat-ed advanced ICBM development develop-ment program has been assigned as-signed to the Ogden Air logistics Center. I THE ADVANCED ICBM development program, designated desig-nated "M-X," is a research and development effort to provide the technology for improving the capability and extending the useful life of existing ICBM systems and to expand the technology base for possible development of future ICBM systems. "; The early selection of Ogden Og-den ALC to provide logistical support associated with such a research and development effort is intended to minimize costs and risks associated "with any future development of an advanced ICBM system, should the U.S. elect to do so. SINCE THE program is in early research and development develop-ment stages, the manpower impact at Ogden ALC will be negligible at this time. Assignment of the logistics support mission to Ogden ALC was based primarily on the Utah center's experience with ICBMs. Ogden ALC is system manager for the Titan II and Minuteman. OFFICIALS said that a number of M-X research programs is now underway to investigate advanced propulsion propul-sion technologies. These include high performance propellants, high strength case materials, a small length-to-diameter ratio third-stage, a thrust termination termina-tion system that allows termination ter-mination at any time during motor operation, and high expansion ratio expandable exit cones for upper stage motors. Also being explored are a highly efficient, accurate, nuclear hardened guidance control system, a canister, intended to protect the missile, mis-sile, a silo shock isolation system and other new techniques. |
