Come on down to the Bountiful Boun-tiful Recreation Center Ice Arena, 150 West 600 North and get in on the action. gone towards transporting of topsoil and other methods to reduce the scars on the mountain. Crews and trucks have dumped over 4,000 cubic yards of topsoil on several of the upper slopes. Following the spreading of the topsoil, a fast growing, sturdy mountain grass seed was heavily planted. To reduce the possibility of having hav-ing the seed blown or washed away, additional steps were taken. Following the seeding, straw bales were broken apart and spread over critically cri-tically exposed areas. The straw acts as a protective covering as well as a spongelike sponge-like absorbent to soak up water and retain maisture for the seed. THE PROCESS certainly didn't stop with the straw. An erosion control polyprepelene mesh netting was spread over the straw and secured to the ground by means of wire staples. The entire area is then contained and washout or blowaway by normal weather pattenrs is all but eliminated, The netting completely dissolves over a period of 10-12 months, leaving leav-ing behind a sturdy growth of mountain grass. Costs are not inexpensive for these methods. Per acre expense exceeds several thousands dollars in order to complete all steps of this soil and seeding program. Over 80 acres have been heavily seeded seed-ed at Park West during the fall; however, not all have required the topsoil and netting net-ting process.
