Show Thunderbird Baseball Squad Opens Season Wth Four Victories Over Weber - Nevada j The College of Southern Utah Thunderbird baseball team opened open-ed the 1963 season successfully Thursday and Friday picking up four wins in as many starts. In the opener of the season Thursday, the T-Birds defeated the Weber Wildcats 2 to 0 to end a four-game winning streak for the northerners then came back on the bottom end of a double-header double-header to defeat Weber 5 to 2 Friday the T-Birds traveled "to Las Vegas, Nev., to meet Nevada Southern. In the opener CSU broke away from a 9 to 9 deadlock dead-lock to win 15 to 9, then came back in the second game to shellac shel-lac the Rebels by a 22 to 3 margin mar-gin In a game called at the end of five innings. The opening contest of the season sea-son was probably the best from the standpoint of pitching. Steve Cahoon picked up the win allowing al-lowing only two hits in the 2 0 shutout and two walks, one an intentional pass. He compiled a total of 12 strikeouts in the seven se-ven inning contest. Cahoon was also an instrumental instru-mental factor in the game at bat scoring the first run on a home run then scoring the second after af-ter he had singled, been advanced advanc-ed to second by a walk then scored on a single by Gordon Loveless. The T-Birds picked up five hits, including two by Cahoon, Ca-hoon, two by Loveless and a single sin-gle by RlchiM Yocum. Friday at Las Vegas, it turned from a pitching and defense battle bat-tle to one of hitting as the Thunderbirds finally turned on a barage of hits. In the opening game they totaled 12 hits and came back with 18 in the reduced re-duced second game. Kent Smith vas the starter in the opening game but he gave v.-ay in the fifth to Edwards and Edwards went on to pick up the victory. The two clubs battled on even terms through six innings in-nings and in the top of the seventh sev-enth the T-Birds exploded for six runs on five hits to notch the victory. Reed Backus, first neman, led the way for Coach Cleo Petty Pet-ty in this game with four hits in five trips and four RBI's. He had two singles, a triple and a double. In the second game, Lawrence Gallegos was the winning pitcher pitch-er going all the way for the T-Birds. T-Birds. He gave up six hits and collected four strikeouts. Backus got things started in the first inning with a two-run homer. Yocum added a homer for the T-Birds in the third and Loveless belted out a round tripper trip-per in the fifth and concluding inning. In that frame the Thunderbirds Thun-derbirds picked up 11 runs on seven hits. Loveless led the hitting hit-ting with four hits in five trips Including his home run. At the conclusion of the four games the T-Birds were hitting .359 as a team, led by Loveless with .615 and the five-man pitching pitch-ing staff had an earned run average av-erage of 2.08, led by Cahoon with 0.00 ERA in seven innings and Edwards with a 0.00 in three innings in-nings of work on the mound. |
