Show 36-Hour Highway Blockade Brings 271 Driver Violations. Few Serious Law enforcement agencies In southern Utah banded together over the past week end to set up a continuous 36-hour road block on U. S. Highway 91 near Cedar City. Under the direct supervision of the Utah Highway Patrol, oth-agencies oth-agencies were called upon to assist as-sist Including the Iron County Sheriffs Dept., Cedar City Police Dept., the Utah Fish and Game Dept., and the Iron County Jeep Patrol. According to Sgt. Robert Reid of the Highway Patrol, the blockade, block-ade, which was established south of Cedar City Saturday at noon then moved to the north of Cedar City Sunday at 9 a. m., continued contin-ued through Sunday midnight During that course of time it is reported that a total of 271 driver dri-ver violation tickets were issued, including warning notices. Two stolen cars were recovered and a number of guns being carried in vehicles were checked and some guns and shells obtained for possible pos-sible investigation, Sgt Rcid reported. re-ported. Two stolen cars Included a vehicle ve-hicle from San Diego, Calif., driven dri-ven by an AWOL Sailor and one was from Cedar City, bing driven by two Cedar City teen-agers. In connection with the blockade, block-ade, a radar unit was set up to check highway speeds. As a result re-sult the most prominent violation viola-tion was that of speeding through the radar check points. Other numerous offenses were drivers license and equipment violations. Sgt Reid, however, said,' not a single drunk driving violation or Intoxication was evidenced during the entire 36 hour period. The sustained blockade was established for several reasons. One was to determine an extensive exten-sive Indication as to the specific amount of traffic on the highway high-way particularly during the night time hours; to establish a pattern of driver speeds on the I highway, both day time and, night time; and of course, to i check out other aspects of investigation in-vestigation relative to stolen vehicles, ve-hicles, gas stealing, illegal gun possesion, etc. Sgt. Reid stated that although a high rate of warnings and tickets were issued, no extreme-1 ly high speed violations were I I Indicated, either day or night |
