Show i Cedar Redmen Bring Home Relay Records from BYU High School Meet In eight relays conducted at the Utah High School Interscho-lastlc Interscho-lastlc Relay Carnival at Provo last Saturday afternoon the Cedar Ce-dar City Redmen thincladsmen returned with two first places, two new state records, and two seconds. Coach Glen Jackson of the high school entered a team on each of the eight events. First places were garnered by the Redmen in Utah High School Medley relay and the half mile relay. Second place honors went to the Redmen quarter mile relay team and the mile relay team. Eldon Webster and Roger Haycock, Hay-cock, with 220 yards each, Herb Corry on the 440 ana! Kenneth Perkins on the 880, set a new record rec-ord on the medley relay with a 3:43.9. Old recoid was 3:44.3. Men of the half mile relay team were Webster, Haycock, Ronald Stratton and Richard Heywood. Time was 1:33.1 compared to the old mark of 1:34. The Redmen bettered the mark by .9 of a second. sec-ond. Place Second Second place teams included Kenneth Griener, Al Hunter, Corry Cor-ry and Perkins on the quarter mile relay, 110 yards each, and Stratton, Bolandr, Dayne Gardner Gard-ner and Heywood on the mile relay, re-lay, 440 yards each. Coach Jackson is now concentrating concen-trating his efforts on the Region Six track and field meet to be held at Delta on Friday, May 6. Winner and second place men in the region meet will be entered in the Utah State High School meet to be hold the following week in Salt Lake City. Three strong trams in Region Six will be vyirg for the lion's share of honors and as a result teams will be weakened in state competition because of the keen competition in Region Six which should be regarded as the strong track and field region of the state. Optimistic View Coach Jackson anticipates a majority of the points in the regional re-gional meet; however, Delta and Millard will be pressing with some outstanding men in a number num-ber of events. Coach Jackson pointed out that in a number of cases first and second places in the region meet will almost be certain for first and second places in the state meet because other schools have not shown the strength of Region Six. On the other hand schools, such as Wasatch Wa-satch Academy in Region Four, will field a large team in the state meet because of lack of competition within that region. Coach Jackson will be taking as many boys as possible to the Region Re-gion event and he has entered as high as six men in some events and at least two in every event with the exception of the pole vault. Dan Shaeffer will be the only entrant in that event. Richard Heywood, who has garnered gar-nered the most points consistenly for the Redmen this year, will be entered in three events, the 100 yard dash, the 220 yard dash, and . the broadjump. Others in the 100 yard dash will include Ronald Stratton, Roger Haycock, Kenneth Ken-neth Griener, Terry Bolander and" Eldon Webster. A number of promising sophomore sopho-more students will also be entered en-tered in events at the region meet and all three of the relays will be entered, the coach stated. In the relay events only the first place winners are allowed in the state meet. As a result Jackson is contemplating some switches in the teams to compensate for the known strength of other teams in the region. |
