Show Iron Countv Teachers Tour Escalante Vallev I An educational tour of the Escalante Es-calante Valley and farming operations oper-ations In that locale was conducted conduct-ed by the Iron County Soil Conservation Con-servation District Monday evening eve-ning for the benefit of some 80 teachers in the county. The group left Monday evening eve-ning at 4:15 and returned at 8:30. Arrangements for the teachers were made by Elmer Cox and Morris Buhanan of Ceda,r City, and Th:les Brown of Parowan. A luncheon was served by the home Economics department of the Cedar Ce-dar City High School at the expense ex-pense of the S C D. Also making the tour were Dr. Marie Hughes, professor of elementary ele-mentary education at the University Univer-sity of Utah, and Lue Groesbeck, jtate supervisor of elementary education. Superintendent Ian-thus Ian-thus Wright and Iron County Elementary Ele-mentary Supervisor Mary McMillan McMil-lan also took part. First stop on the tour was at the Wayne Holt farm at Beryl. Here the teachers saw concrete ditches being poured and were told of a few of the advantages of the concrete canals, particularly particu-larly regarding water conservation. conserva-tion. At the Burnus Barlow farm, also at Beryl, the teachers were shown the various methods of sealing ponds to insure against seepage in the storage reservoirs. Also the advantage of having fish In these pods was told to the group, and Otto Fife pf the Beryl Junction caught a couple of trout as proof of their existence ex-istence there. A third demonstration of syphon sy-phon Irrigation from a concrete j canal was shown at the Wlllard Randall farm In that area. Demonstration Dem-onstration of the use of sjyhpons was given. In the Escalante area the group was shown a livestock feeding corral and a pig farrowing pen. Advantages and methods of planting for wind breaks were explained at the John McGarry operation on the blossoming des-sert. des-sert. Also the use of a tree plant-ing plant-ing machine was demonstrated for the group. Final stop on the tour was at the Ralph Smith farm where the use of Irrigated pasture was demonstrated, dem-onstrated, along with concrete pipe lines for Irrigation purposes. |
