Show Iron County Agent Describes Treatment for Adequate Control of Noxious Quack Grass Quack grass is one of the most ol, noxious noxious weeds, particularly parti-cularly in Hardens and lawns and fields in the Cedar City area. Now is about the right time of year to do something about ridding rid-ding your place of this weed. To control quack grass Iron County Agent, Stephen L. Hrower, suggested the use of the following follow-ing plan. First, keep the foliage grazed o- cut close to the ground until mid summer, then plow ( to 8 indies deep with the object of exposing as many of the roots to the sun and air as possible. If the land is then kept dry this will kill all of the exposed roots. AJter two or three weeks of this treatment the land should bo worked with spring-tooth harrow har-row or a similar digging imple-mrnt imple-mrnt to bring more roots to the surface to dry. One season of this treatment will often give satisfactory control. Quack grass is one of the wheat grasses which has the ability to spread rapidly and form a tough mass of underground under-ground root stocks thus crowding out other desirable plants. It is a shallowrooed perennial, sel- dcin going more than eight inches in-ches below the surface. A distinguishing distin-guishing eh'iraeteristic to identity iden-tity it by is the presence of aur-1 icles or "ears" at the junction of j the leaf, these "ears" clasp I I around the sheath like a collar, j ' Quack grass is NOT controlled by 2, 'I D. Other chemicals, such as TCA. which is sometimes recommended, rec-ommended, have not given satisfactory satis-factory control in Utah. Where quack grass is a problem prob-lem on ditch banks and in the: bottom of flitches, a new soil stcrilant called C.M.U. has proven prov-en effective. This is a white pow-dtr pow-dtr and should be applied at the rate of 'i -pound per square i rofJ. It is best mixed with water and sprayed on. Fall is the rec- j ommended time of year, and all old vegetation should be removed by burning or cutting prior to application of the chemical. Care must be exercised in the use cf C.M.U. since it does not dissolve easily in waTer and remains in the surface soil for a number of years. Do not apply it where de-i de-i suable vegetation is growing. Fall application is recommended so that rains and snow can car-ry car-ry it into the soil. |
