Show Pioche Persistence Nets Softball Tournament Championship Award Pioche, the "Brooklyn Dodgers" of the Southern Utah Softball Tournament, came up with their first tournament victory in five tries in the championship game in previous pre-vious years. Sponsored by R. R. Orr, Ford distributor in Pioche the team downed Iron County Record, Caliente, Nev., and Columbia Iron Mines, in that order to capture the title. Enterprise, after suffering a defeat in the first evening of play, came back strong to take Milford and Iron County Record for consolation honors. Columbia entered the championship cham-pionship game after defeating Enterprise in the opener, taking Bradshaw in the second round, and then went down to defeat in the final game to the powerful Pioche crew. Special awards of the tournament tourna-ment were given to the following: follow-ing: Outstanding Pitcher Outstanding pitcher award Gordon Lytic of Pioche. Chucking Chuck-ing all three evenings of play Gordon seemed exceptionally strong in this year's tournament. Sliding by the Iron County Record Rec-ord with ease, ho met his worst trouble against Caliente in the second nilit of play. Against Columbia in the- championship game his slow ball, with emphasis em-phasis on the "slow", held the powerful miners to one hit. lie was awarded a wrist watch by Hyers Jewelry. ! The "Most valuable player." Eldon "liunny" Fullmer, short stop for Columbia, won a watch donated by Mullett Jewelry for his display of fielding, hitting and running ability. Not only is i this fleetfooted ball hawk a demon de-mon on the field, be is one man who can stretch a single into a double half the time. Best Outfielder Outstanding outfielder, Lyle iStever of Pioche won this award on the basis of his outstanding I hitting power. In the championship champion-ship game he drove in three of the four runs, connecting with a solid double with the bases loaded. Errorless in the field and an alert back-up man from the centerfield spot he hit five times in 10 trips with two doubles dou-bles and a triple. Pioche collected col-lected only four hits but they concentrated three of them in the third inning for the first three runs of the game. Columbia, however, loaded the bases in the third with only one man away, but the Pioche defense tightened to snuff the rally.
