Show Poinf ers on Gzass Cutting There's a right and a wrong way to mow your lawn! Even though the man of the house probably does the job, you can surprise him with a few pointers from the C S U specialists. Whenever you can, avoid cutting cut-ting the grass very close. Many grasses . . . when cut closer than one inch . . . become thick and weedy. Grass that's been cut short has shallow roots . . . and won't withstand drought as welL Longer grass looks more healthy, too. So. keep your lawn at about an inch and a half during the growing season. Now, of course, all this may mean that you have to mow your lawn a bit oftener. The extra work pays off in a better looking look-ing lawn though. Moreover, you will reduce weed and drought injury. Most lawn mowers can be adjusted to cut at whatever height you wish. Here's another lawn pointer. 11 you can, leave the clippings on the lawn . . . right where they fall. As the clippings decay, they , provide good fertilizer. However, if you can see bunches of gTass the day after mowing, you should rake them off. Otherwise, they might smother and kill the grass underneath. |
