Show Coach Osborne Boasts Top Player Line-up for Coming Football Season Bruce Osborne, new football coach at the College of Southern Utah, will start activities at the Bronco school next Wednesday, Sept. 1, when he will hold the first practice prac-tice session of the 1954 season. Osborne will issue suits to prospective Bronco squad members throughout the day, and begin the first practice at 6 p. m. Wednesday. After that practices will be held each evening eve-ning in preparation for the first game of the season, to be held a week before the opening of school, or Sept. 18. On that day the Broncos will journey to Phoenix, Phoe-nix, Ariz, to tangle with the always al-ways tough Phoenix Junior College Col-lege Bears. One week later local fans will see the Broncos in action for (the first time, when Osborne pits I his charges against another powerful pow-erful team, Antelope Valley, Cal. .The game will be played on the C S U field under the lights. All Get Fair Chance In announcing the first practice prac-tice session of the season the new coach emphasized that any college student interested in making a try for a position on the Bronco squad, wilt be given a fair chance to show what he can do, whether or not he has played at C S U or at any high school before this year. He urges all students interested to report for practice on the first night. j It is too early to get much of ,an idea of wnat strength the j Broncos will have this year, but quite a number of promising players have already indicated that they will definitely be on hand. Among these are at least a dozen lettermen from last year's squad. Included in this group are J. N. Webster and Keith Tatter-I Tatter-I sail, halfbacks; Lawrence Ash-! Ash-! clown and Ralph Jackson, fullbacks; full-backs; Don Ray Melling and Don Keeney, quarterbacks; Ray Stephenson Ste-phenson and John Wood, ends; Don Tompkinson and Wendell Holmes, tackles; Bill Brown, guard; Keith Cooley and Kendall Lister, centers. New Members Billy Jarrett and Ken Benson, two husky members of last year's Cedar High School team, should add strength to the line. Throe I members of the Millard High School squad, last year's state class B champions, will also be on hand. They the Ross Marshall. Don L. Rasmussen and Kimball Davis, all linemen. Another promising prospect is Bill Meadow of Moab, who gained gain-ed all-state recognition four years ago, and has been in military service since. Leo Prestwich of Delta will be here and should add considerable strength to the squad, as will three young men from Provo, Byron Rasmussen, David Berry and Jesse Ilollerman. |
