Conservation must be stressed and encouraged through education and tax incentives. Neclear, solar, synthetic fuels, gasohol, etc., . should all be developed. Answers to the League of Women Voters questionnaire: how should this country meet its energy needs? Energy development has been one of my top priorities in Congress. Last year I passed the McKay-McDade program providing $20 billion for synthetic fuels. Tar sand and oil shale leasing bills are necessary steps to producing more oil. As we produce more oil we become less dependent on OPEC. What should the role of the federal government be in preparing to meet the social problems which come with "boom-town" areas? Social problems accompany breakdowns break-downs in communities. Federal, t technical and monetary resources should bolster local efforts to preserve community integrity during rapid growth. Smaller communities need help to implement growth strategies (including educational, recreational, captial improvement, and other programs) which enhance local values and lifestyles, thus easing adjustment problems. |
