Monsen has been a member of the State Board of Examiners, a constitutional board which has the power to examine all claims against the state. Monsen feels . that his philosophy of government is shared by the majority of Utahns. Since his election at Lt. Governor, the office of Lt. Governor has been reshaped. The father of five pledges himself to continue to serve the needs of the people and "limit government to the performance of necessary duties and essential services, not the acquisition of rights." Answers to the League of Women Voters questionnaire: What is your opinion of the proposed revision of the Executive Article of the state constitution placing the Auditor on the State Board of Examiners in place of the Secretary of State-Lt. Governor?? More serious, but not addressed by this question, is the elemination of the constitutional authority of the Board of Examiners. That and other reasons also not addressed encourage my opposition op-position to the amendment. Specifically, I support this section to insure independence if the citizens decide the Lt. Governor should run in tandum with the Governor. What new duties would you like to see assigned to the Secretary of State-Lt. Governor under the proposed revision f'" ' ' 1 I Y I Moroni L. Jensen DEMOCRAT of the Executive Article of the State Constitution? The Governor should have the flexibility to make assignments based on his needs and the talents of the Lt. Governor. Those duties should develop the office of Lt. Governor, promote Utah, and provide more efficient government. These duties should not be fixed in law except to insure meaningful responsibility. |
