"Project Head Start was launched in 1965 to break the cycle of poverty in the United States, and we give enrollment priority to the children of low income families. We all feel the economic pinch, pin-ch, but the federal government defines a low income family by the size of the family and its yearly year-ly income," said Dr. Kramer. The Whiterocks Center offers two programs. A half day program serves 3 and 4 year old children, Monday to Thursday, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Children are transported to and from the Head Start center by our bus driver, and they are fed a nutritious snack and lunch while participating in an enriching educational educa-tional program. If parents are away from home all day because they are working, work-ing, they may be interested in-terested in the Full Day program. The center is open from 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. and parents drop off their 2-5 year old children on the way to work and pick them up after work. The children are fed a nutritious breakfast, lunch, lun-ch, and snack at the center. For those 5 year olds attending kindergarten in the morning, morn-ing, the public school bus brings the children to the center in time for lunch, and the Head Start teachers support and supplement sup-plement the kindergarten curricula. Head Start also offers comprehensive medical and dental screenings and treatment, an immunization im-munization program, and a full range of developmental services for children with special needs. |
