Show L I The Uintah Ute football team finished in fifth place in Region 7 at 1 win and 4 losses and had an overall record of 3 wins ana 5 losses. However, the Uintah Ute crew is a lot better football team tnan their win and loss record indicates. in-dicates. Judge Memorial, Murray and Cyprus placed first, second and third in Region 7 and all thre teams competed in the first round of the 3-A State Tournament. The Uintah Utes had leads in their games with Cyprus, Judge Memorial and Murray. Uintah had a 13-0 lead in their game with Cyprus, but the Pirates rallied to win the game, 21 to 13. The Utes had an 8-7 advantage in the game with Judge Memorial, but the Bulldogs rallied to win the game by the score of 21 to 8. The Utes had an 8-0 at the end of the first half in the game with Murray, but the Spartans overcame the ' Uintah lead to win the game, 15 to 8. Uintah completely dominated the Spartans in the first half and had many chances to score more points in the first and second quarters. If.the Utes could have gained a break or two they might be completing in the state tournament. All three Region 7 teams in the 3-A State Football Tournament emerged as winners, Saturday. Judge Memorial, first place team from Region 7, bombed Box Elder, 34 to 10 and Murray, second place team from Region 7, nipped South, 14 to 10. Cyprus, Region 7 third place team, edged Cedar City, first place team in Division Two in Region Six, 7 to 6 in overtime. Chris Klekas kicked two field goals to give Judge Memorial a 6-0 lead, but Mike Martinez scored a touchdown to give Box Elder a 7 to 6 advantage. However, Judge acquired a 14-7 lead at halftime on a 35-yard pass from Mike Curtain to Robert Thomas and a two-point conversion con-version pass play from Curtain to Mike Clark. Judge Memorial added three more touchdowns on a 12-yard run by Larry Colosimo, 12-yard pass from Curtain to Robert Thomas and a 70-yard 70-yard punt return by David Harmon. Murray had a 7-2 lead at the end of the first half. The Spartans scored a touchdown on a 35-yard pass in- . terception by John Durfey and South gained a safety. Brent Hilton fired a seven-yard touchdown pass to Rick Elorreago and the extra point kick gave Murray 14 to 2 lead in the third quarter. South cut Murray's lead to four points, 14-10, with a two yard touchdown run by quarterback, Doug Tonge and a pass from Tonge to Matt Poison for a two-point conversion. Cyprus quarterback Dennis Rupp hit Gilbert Vanquez on a ten yard pass play and Todd Thomas added the extra poiirt to deliver a 7-6 victory to the Pirates in overtime at Cedar City. The previously unbeaten Redmen, who were ranked first in the Tribune Captain's Poll, acquired a 6-0 lead on a five yard sweep by Dave Carter in the overtime period. However, Cedar City missed the extra point kick. In other 3-A state tournament games, Highland downed Spanish Fork, 21 to 13; Viewmont upset the first place team in Division One in Region Six, American Fork, 32 to 26; Mountain View downed Ogden, 24 to 14; West toppled Springville, 45-0 and Davis downed Pleasant Grove, 30-7. 3-A State Tournament games set for this week are: Viewmont at Cyprus, Highland at Judge Memorial, Murray at Davis and Mountain View at West. The Uintah Ute football team began the season with a disappointing 23-0 loss to Lehi in Vernal and ended the season with a disappointing, 29 to 12 loss to Jordan, but in between there were happy moments for the Utes. Uintah fell behind 14 to 0 to the Union Cougars in Vernal, but they rallied to win the game, 20 to 14. The Utes' defense stopped a number of early drives by the Green River Wolves and then Rick Morton scored two touchdowns, touch-downs, which enabled the Utes to win the game, J2-0 and send the Wolves home unhappy. The Uintah Utes fell behind 7-0 in the game with Tooele, but sophomore, Pat Jenkins scored a touchdown on a punt return and Mark Robb scored a touchdown touch-down on a long run and the Utes won Tooele's homecoming contest, 12 to 7. The win over Tooele was Uintah's third victory in a row, which hadn't been obtained by a Ute team since 1965. Uintah made their home crowd happy when they jumped out to a 13-0 lead on touchdowns by Dave Emery and Morton in the Ute homecoming encounter. However, the Utes couldn't stop Gilbert Vasquez, who rushed for over 200 yards and scored three touchdowns touch-downs in Cyprus' 21 to 13 come from behind victory. The Utes also had leads in the games with Judge Memorial and Murray, but they let victory slip away from them. The Utes came pretty close to defeating Cyprus and Murray. The Pirates nipped Cedar City, first place team from Region Six, 7 to 6, in overtime over-time and Murray edged the second place team from Region Five, 14 to 10, which proves the point that Uintah has a good football team.
