Free cancer test at Vernal Drug In conjunction with the Uintah Cancer Society, pharmacists at the Vernal Drug will distribute tests for cancer of the colon to their customers who request them. "The service is being provided free of charge," said Anna Oldham, president of the Uintah Chapter of the Cancer Society. "All it costs is for the postage stamp." For some time, the American Cancer Society (ACA) has been issuing Guaiac test kits at ACA-sponsored clinics. This kit consists of three specially prepared slides on which a perosn places three samples of stools. These are mailed to a laboratory which tests the samples for invisible blood and reports its findings to the person. Cancer of the colon and rectum will strike 114,000 Americans this year. About 53,000 die of it annually. More than two out of three could be saved by earily diagnosis and prompt treatment through a new application of this diagnostic test. The Utah Pharmaceutical Association and the Utah Division of American Cancer Society are collaborating on this new program, stressing the importance of early detection of colorectal cancer. ' According to Mrs. Oldham persons under 40 are most affected by cancer of the colon and are urged to take the test. Cancer growing inside the colon or large bowel can cause bleeding which is detected by this test. If the findings are positive more tests will be given by a doctor. There are many more methods of curing this type of cancer, in its early staged than most other types of cancer. |
