Carl Rodiger. known also as Karl Schroeder, said to be a lieutenant-commander in the German navy, and believed by agents of the department de-partment of justice to be paymaster of German agents In this country, Central and South America, was arrested here today and held in ?15,000 ball. One of his chief purposes is believed to have been to induce Irishmen to enlist in the British navy, in the hope that they would plant bombs on warships. Rodiger denied de-nied that he was a German. Hie examination exam-ination was set for May 8. The arrest of Rodiger followed the apprehension ap-prehension last Saturday of Madame Marie de Victorlca, said to have been one of his most active lieutenants. The woman, wom-an, who is in the prison ward at Belle-vue Belle-vue hospital, admitted, according to the federal authorities, that she had received about $40,000 from Rodiger since her arrival ar-rival in this country in 1917, but denied, they said, that the money was used for German propaganda here. She insisted, they said, that the money represented Interest on large estates owned by her In Chile. Rodiger, who had been under observation observa-tion by agents of the department of justice jus-tice for some time, was known in the government records as "Lieutenant-Commander X." Agents of the department declined to state tonight the specific charge that would ultimately be made against him. "Lieutenant - Commander X" is said to have come to the United States In December, 1916, four months before the United States entered the war, and stopped at a hotel where he associated with Count von Bernstorff and other leading Germans. One of the special forms of work In which he was engaged here, It was said, was trying to induce disaffected young Irishmen to join the English navy with a view to placing bombs on British war vessels and causing their destruction. The man is believed by the federal authorities to have expended millions of dollars on the western hemisphere in the last sixteen months. |
