Show TO COMPLETE COAST MILITARY HIGHWAY Rush Construction Work on Last Link in Concrete Chain of California State Eoad. Begun five years ago as the connecting connect-ing link. between California's two world expositions in 1915, a" coast line state highway between Los Angeles and San Francisco will be completed this fall and will constitute 500 miles of the finest military highway in the world. Announcement wTas made today by Chairman N. P. Darlington of the state highway commission that the last twenty-four miles of the long stretch will be finished within a few months, regardless regard-less of labor shortage. California's great trunk highway system, sys-tem, when first projected, was generally accepted as a lure for automobile tourists. tour-ists. Its completion, however, has brought a realization that the state was building better than the people knew. The smooth asphalt road for automobiles automo-biles now may be used as a military highway. Since the war has brought out that the mobilization of coast defenses is necessary, the importance of the California Califor-nia state highway has become enormous. enor-mous. It will permit of the quick movement move-ment of munitions, commissaries, troops, cannon and all that goes to make powerful pow-erful coast defense. If the occasion should arise for hasty mobilization to any point on the Pacific coast, the newly completed travel artery would provide a means practically independent indepen-dent of the railroads. There would also be available for military use the enormous number of automobiles in the state, many of which now are used in passenger and freight transportation up and down the coast. It has been estimated that there are automobiles enough in Los Angeles' county to move almost the entire population popu-lation in one load. |
