The University of Illinois eleven, playing in its best style and fulfilling the expectations of its adherents, ad-herents, today defeated the University of Chicago, 2!) to 0. on Stagg field. The result, taken in connection with the defeat de-feat of Northwestern at Iowa City, strengthened IIHnois's claim to whatever championship honors are likely to be evolved from the 1918 season. Tiie local team showed little Improvement Improve-ment over its previous appearances. Shifts In Its lineup, due to injuries of regulars, reduced its team play to a minimum, min-imum, and some of the substitutes were so green that they frequently violated rules. This was especially true of part of the line, whose holding cost Chicago a number of fifteen-yard penalties. The Chicago punting was weak and tho wings ineffective. This play came after Chicago had braced and kept Illinois to five yards gain on threo downs from the ten-yard line. Bucheit caught the ball two feet from the lino and fell across it and the count. Illinois stood Chicago on Its head with forward passes in the third period. Ralph Fletcher took Kirkpatrick's place at right half and caught four of Walqulst'.s six tosses. Two of these plays resulted in touchdowns and Fletcher also kicked one goal, bringing IIHnois's total to 22. More forward passing added to the II -linoios scoring in the final period.
