Show ALLIES OPPOSED 01 Oil RIVER Swampy Condition of Terrain Ter-rain Confines Operations to Railways. ARCIIANGTyU Nov. 22. (By the Associated As-sociated Press.) The American and entente en-tente troops have encountered strong op-j op-j position both on the Vologda-Archangel railway and on the Dvina river. Owing I to the swampy condition of the terrain H J has been necessary to confine operations ! to the waterway and the railway. As the upper part of the river is deeper than at Its mouth, the Bolshevik craft, equipped with large guns, have been better able to maneuver than the entente ships, and have prevented the occupation of Kotlas by the entente. A plan Is under discussion in military circles for the creation of a voluntary army for Russian relief, should the allies al-lies agree upon the policy of feeding Russia. i Daylight In Archangel now is of only 1 four hours' duration, and this tact, with the fogs, facilitates the guerrilla warfare . of the Bolsheviki, operating in the shelter of the forests. It is believed the evacu- , ition of the Archangel district by the a!- 1 lies would probably result in the murder of the entire population friendly to the i entente by the- Bolsheviki. just as thej elements antagonistic to the "Bolshevik i i were slaughtered in the Volga towns evacuated by the Czechs after the estab- i Ushment of white guard governments un- j der the Czech support. A similar slaugh- J ter occurred at Vologda, where entente; supporters who rallied about the embassies em-bassies were persecuted mercilessly after I the departure of the entente diplomats. Allied encouragement of the anti-Bol- j shevik organization has carried with it a. responsibility which the military leaders are unwilling to overlook. |
