Show LUXEMBURG . 1 The grand duchy of Luxemburg was included in-cluded from 1815 to 1866 in the dissolved Germanic confederation. By the treaty of Jxmdon, May 11, 1867, it was declared neutral territory and tts integrity and in-dependenca in-dependenca were guaranteed. There is a chamber of deputies in the grand duchy of fifty-three, members, elected directly by the cantons for six years, the half renewed re-newed every three years. Luxemburg lias an area of 9!) 8 square miles, which is slightly more than Salt Lake county, and a population census on December 1, 1910, showed 59,891, comprised of 134,101 males and 125,790 females. The population popula-tion is Catholic, save 4007 Protestants, 1 270 Jews and 803 belonging to other sects. The chief town, Luxemburg, has 20.848 inhabitants. A compilation of the finances of the duchy shows that in 1913 the revenue reve-nue totaled 18.101,733 francs and expenditures expen-ditures 20,484,564 francs. These amounts increased gradually annually until in 1917 the revenues aggregated 43,761,428 francs, which Included a loan of 25,076,500 francs. The expenditures totaled 48,045,794 francs. The debt of the duchy on December 31, 1916, amounted to 45,754.917 francs. The production of iron in 1916. a leading industry of the section, was 935,716 tons, as against 980, 3S4 in the year before. For , commercial purposes Luxemburg is included in-cluded in the German Zollverein. There were 325 miles of railway in 1914 and 439 miles of telegraph line, with 1352 miles of wire and 356 telegraph offices in 1915. There were also in 1915 a total of 107 telephone systems, with 858 miles of line and 4690 miles of wire. In 1915 there were V'J postoffices through which there passed 9,301,000 letters, 5,142,000 postcards and 16,443,000 pieces of miscellaneous mail, an average of 119 pieces of mail for each inhabitant in-habitant each year. Marie Adelaide, born on June 14, 1S94, is the reigning grand duchess, succeeding to the rule on the death of her father, the late Grand Duke Wilhelm, on February 2fi, 1912. She has five sisters, the Princess Charlotte, born on January 23, 1896; Princess Prin-cess Hilda, born February 15, 1897; Princess Prin-cess Antoinette, born October 7, 1899; Princess Elisabeth, born March 7, 1901; Princess Sophie, born February 14, 1902. |
