Show MAY ASK HUGHES: President Wilson has been studying the railroad question for some days and is believed to have reached a conclusion conclu-sion in the premises. The general impression im-pression appears to be that ho will propose some kiDd of government control con-trol and names of men who might possibly pos-sibly be selected as the government's administrator or director are being mentioned. In the list we find Secretary Secre-tary Lane, Associate Justice Brandeis, former Associate Justice Hughes and Secretary McAdoo. They are all verv capable men, but as Lane, Brandeis and McAdoo already hold high government ; positions it would be wise for the president presi-dent to offer the place to Mr. Hughes if there is any chance of his acceptance. accept-ance. Hughes is not a good politician, but j he made a record as governor of New York and distinguished himself as a I member of Ihe highest court in the j land. Before that he conducted the' I insurance investigation in seedi manner as to impress all people who read the newspapers at that time that the wool could not be pulled over his eyes. We are not at all certain that Mr. Hughes is anxious to attempt to solve such a difficult problem, yet we do not see how he could avoid responding to a call to duty made on patriotic grounds. |
