Tonight the fraternal orga nizatioDS will1 hold a mass meeting in Eagles hall for the purpose or! outlining the aims of the Red Cross and of organizing organiz-ing a drive among the fraternal societies soci-eties to gather in memberships. Arrangements Ar-rangements have been made for increased in-creased seating capacity at the hall and a record-breaking attendance is anticipated. antici-pated. Meetings Arranged. Addressing the meeting will be John D. Spencer, chairman of the general committee in charge of the work in the Salt Lake district; Mrs. Joseph Y. flyilo and YV. W. Ray, United States district attorney. In " addition to the addresses thero will be a musical programme pro-gramme from the Salt Lake Opera company com-pany quintette, composed of tho following follow-ing well-known musicians: Mary Atkinson, At-kinson, soprano; Edna Dwyer, contralto; Fred C. Graham, tenor; Horace S. Ensign, En-sign, barritone, and Becky Almond, pianist pia-nist e. The enthusiasm being manifested by the fraternal organizations is equalled among the various labor bodies of the city. At a meeting of the Federation of Labor La-bor in the Lahor temple Friday night, members of the Red Cross committee made addresses which were listened to with deepest attention and greeted with storms of applause. At the termination ter-mination of the addresses a rising vote was taken pledging unanimous support to the membership campaign. Calls for membership blanks were numerous at tho meeting aud indicated the high pitch of enthusiasm prevailing. Meetings will bo held at the Labor temple during the coming week and will be addressed by well-known speakers. The Red Cross committee is counting upon the labor organizations to furnish fur-nish a large part of Salt Lake's quota of members. An enthusiastic meeting was held in the Hotel Utah yesterday afternoon of all the women workers, headed by -Mrs. Simon Bamberger's committee engaged in the campaign in Salt Lake City and Salt 'Lake county. Reports were received re-ceived and all showed that the campaign cam-paign is well organized. Instructions To Be Given. An exhibition enrollment was staged at the meeting to give the workers an ! idea of exactly how to receive mem-! mem-! berships. Specific instructions were also ; given which will be transmitted to the school children by their principals and teachers. Booths have been established in all' the department stores, leading hotels, ! railroad stations, at the Amelia palace; and the Y. M. C. A. Women who will ; be gowned as Red Cross nurses have ; been selected to take charge of these j booths. More than 350 women have j I volunteered for the service. Ono of the most interesting features ; of the campaign will be the rendition i of Christmas carols on Christmas eve ; at the hour the campaign closes. At this hour all members of the Red Cross are instructed to put a placard in their ; window which is transparent and which bears the insignia of the Red Cross. At 7:30 in the evening they are to place a candle behind this card so that the emblem may be seen blazing from the j street. At the moment that these "beautiful: symbols flash out, the tuneful voices : of hundreds of Salt Lake's children will ; burst into the melody of Christmas carols. It is planned to have a group of , children for each city block. They will j be under the direction of competent directors and the feature is expected , to prove one of the most attractive ! ever inaugurated in Salt Lake. Many Volunteers. At the Saturday afternoon meeting at tho Hotel Utah all Red Cross workers work-ers who appear in uniform next week in the canvassing work were instructed I to wear the Red Cross badge on their caps only. Another important decision was announced, an-nounced, in that no checks will be taken for Red Cross memberships during dur-ing the campaign. Only the cash will be accepted by the children and other workers. Members of the general committee announced last night that Denver's challenge to raise more than twice as manv members per 'capita as Salt Lake has been accepted. |
