One of the many curious cu-rious results of the shortage of food in Germany Is that the Saxon government has issued "goose cards." The maximum maxi-mum price for Uite great German delicacy is not to exceed So cents a pound. There are more complaints than ever of the manner in wblch food rations are work-ins- . Thus it is stated by Ilerr Calwer. a famous economic authority, that without bread rations obtained illegally (by purchase pur-chase of forged bread tickets and in other ways), "a great many workmen could not keep themselves fit and do the work required re-quired of them." The disappearance of the six million pigs which are "missing'' may be explained ex-plained hy the attempt 01 the government to cut down the rations of farmers and peasants who keep pigs. These people are apparently to be allowed more to cat in' future, for as Dr. Bohme sagely remarks: re-marks: "The man who produces food will ahvavs fill his own stomach before he dispenses food to other unknown human hu-man beings." Bitter complaints are made of the wages, "which beggar all description," in the German textile trade. As for 1 tic Prussian state coal miners, the government govern-ment pays the men returned from military mili-tary service only "o cents a day. Skilled brewers yerv rarely exceed $S a week. Food and cldthimr are at fantastic prices. |
