The members of the committee include Citv Commissioner Stephen B. Newman, chairman, and E. C. Schmidt, secretary. The committee, it is announced, will have general charge of the entertainment entertain-ment of all the soldiers now at Fort Douglas and those who may come there from time to time during the period of the war. Owing to the fact that . measures for the entertainment of the , soldiers during the holidays have al- ready been taken into consideration and provided, the new sub-committee will defer its activities until after the first of the year. Plans have already been completed for the erection of a stage aT the armv Y. M. C. A. at Fort Douglas where will beshown vaudeville acts offered at the various Salt Lake theaters during their visit to the city. Not only vaudeville acts, but the stars of road shows who come to Salt Lake from time to time will be seen there by the soldiers. Members of the Stage Mechanics' association of Salt Lake have offered to provide materials for building the stage, doing the work themselves, and will furnish the necessary scenic equipment. equip-ment. At a meeting of the motion picture operators of the city, to be held tomorrow, tomor-row, steps will be taken to enlist their services, so that the soldiers may be provided with plenty of screen attractions. attrac-tions. It will be the aim of the committee "to provide at least one show a week at tbe Y. M. C. A. theater. Included in the plans of the committee com-mittee is one to induce the managers of the dancing academies to allow special rates for the soldiers. Several have alreadv been approached on the subject and "have indicated their assent. Plans for a soldiers' skating rink somewhere in the vicinity of Fort Douglas are also under wav and it is expected that in a short time men will bo put to work excavating a big plot of ground, leveling it off and making it ready for winter sport. The city will furnish the labor for this purpose. Members of the committee wish it emphasized that local talent is also to participate in the entertainment provided pro-vided the soldiers at the Y. M. C. A. theater. It is requested that those who wish to offer their services will report thnir names at once to either Mr. Newman New-man or Mr. Schmidt at the Orpheuni theater, together with the nature of their performance. |
