Show WILLYS-OVERLAND " HAS BIGCOiTRAGI An article which appeared in. the December De-cember 8 issue of the Wail Street Journal, Jour-nal, which caused a great deal of comment com-ment throughout the country, is referred to by Manager Arch Browning of the Browning Auto & Supply company, local Willys-Overland distributors, as indicative indica-tive of the big things now being done by the Willys-Overland manufacturers. The article, which bears the caption, "Willys-Overland War Orders Run Into Millions," ias follows: "Boston Tt 1b rumored in Washington that Willys-Overland has closed a large I war order, running between $15,000,000 j and $-'0,000,000, and is negotiating for another an-other contract which will run from ?o,-000.000 ?o,-000.000 to $30,000,000. "Overland officials refuse to discuss this phase of their activities, except to admit that the company has on its books I government business in addition to that I originating with Curtiss Aeroplane. I "The demands upon its subsidiary. Cur- i tlss, for airplanes are so tremendous as i to push Overland 's manufacturing re- j sources to the utmost. Though the work i of getting this huge programme in smooth ' running order has taken a vast amount of time and energy, things are in such shape now as to permit of a further big increase in production. "The Elmira plant, which is handling the bulk of the Curtiss work, is running nigiit and day with a working force of 4000. The Elyria plant vill soon be put upon a nlght-and-day schedule and a large part of its equipment utilized for the manufacture of aeroplane parts and motors In conjunction with the regular manufacture of Knight motors. "Willys-Overland has had the jump on all the big motor companies so far as lending concrete aid lo Uncle Sam's war operations is concerned. At the pace it is going it will early in 191 S be handling government work on a scale almost as j large as its normal passenger car busi- ness, or at the rate of about $120,000,000 : per annum." ! Commenting- on this article, Manager 1 Browning states that notwithstanding the fact that Willys-Overland factories are producing millions of dollars' worth of equipment for the government the pro- ; duction of cars for the trade is not cur- i tailed one iota, and that every dealer will i receive his full allotment of cars in 1918. just as he did in 1917, and that many will receive greatly increased allotments. Browning states that the Willys-Over- i land factory is also making several thousand thou-sand of the new 1 200-pound Overland , trucks, equipped with standard Over- : land ambulance bodies, for government use. Browning left Thursday for the Willys-Knight Willys-Knight and Overland headquarters, where he will arrange for next season's business and attend to other matters demanding his attention. j |
