Here are two stories showing liow American officers in France fit't tliinps doi.e. An artillery battery commander, com-mander, having received orders to transfer trans-fer his command by rail, loaded the men and their eiuiiment and then discovered dis-covered that no engine was attached to the train and none appeared available. At that moment a small freight engine arrived in the, yards and its engineer and fireman, at first protesting, obeyed the. batterv commander's orders to take out the artillery train. This engine l, roving not powerful enough to move the hcavv load, it was permitted to proceed on its regular freight rn.ii. A few niinutps later, a 'passenger ,ain arrived with a much more power- ful engine. This one was cheerfully commandeered by the American officer and soon his organization was transported trans-ported on time. Available records do not indicate -whether that train's passengers pas-sengers have (rone forward as yet. The second incident occurred the day before Thanksgiving, but has just eome to light. An officer, under orders to see that the necessary quantity of cranberries cran-berries reached his command in time for the holiday feast, discovered that no freight, train service was available. The barrels could not be moved by express, so the American bought passenger pas-senger tickets, had the barrels trundled into the compartment of. the ear and arranged in the previously reserved seats before the astounded railway officials. of-ficials. And the officer made his cranberry cran-berry deliver'.- in time for the dinner! |
