Show WTilWOELj JORfllJiPIIi; Worked Out Details of Mar-velous Mar-velous Car Before Having It Built. Manager J. A. Greenewuld of ihe Mcr-cr Mcr-cr & Jordan Sales company, local Jordan distributers, is in receipt of a lively and interc.'-t incr letter ironi Kd ward S. Jordan Jor-dan of the Jordan Motor Car company, in which the germination of the idea for the new Jordan "Sport Marine" model was eon reived and which will undoubtedly he of interest to those who hao seen this beautiful car in the Meruer & .Ionian show windows. "One day last winter." writes: Jordan, "I stepped into a lirondway salesroom to look at a special cm-tom-built hody, mounted on a oOi.io chassis. 1 l was rut like a cameo. marvelously r'a.-hionerl from ahiurinuin. with beveled side lines, square doors tihJ straight as an arrow from dash to tailored top. "Kvery detail of its wonderful finish and omplete equipment revealed an artist's hand. The initials on the door were those of the most successful theatrical producer on liroadway. Here, I concluded, is one man's idea of what a motor ear should Jhhe and possibly what t he public wants. r7 .The impression made by that car never left my mind. I went back twice to see !t. Then I found myself drawing pictures of It on the backs of envelopes Taken from my pocket while riding on trains. "In February I had a small wooden model made for my desk. In March I asked a body designer to bviild a sample from aluminum. When it was finished, in May, it was mounted on the standard Jordan chassis. Such a body would be out of place except in the company of the best mechanical units, and, above all. the equipment must be complete and the color right. At noon. August -;, the car was completed. Fifty of our distributers, all old, experienced motor car merchants, were in convention at the factory. "We had decided to show them the Sport Marine. The named flashed Into my mind one day while looking at the wooden model, which suggested a trim yacht. The distributers had never heard, or dreamed, of this car. We drove in a thunder storm to Broadlawn that night for dinner. A young woman had taken i the car out beforehand. At 6 o'clock the sun -burst th rough the clouds and she and the Sport Marine appeared. "Carl Page of New York saw it first. Tie shouted: ' look .at that automobile!' "For an hour the distributers followed- that car around. 'This is what the public wants.' they said. "It's the first complete com-plete car.' "The Sport Marine had 'arrived.' "On the following morning the distributers distribu-ters cut the cards for tills first ear. Charles K. Raker of Detroit drew the ace of hearts. Then we decided to build one special job for each distributer not to be gold, but to advertise Jordan. The dealers have found it impossible to resist the demand. They cannot deny the public pub-lic what it wants. Therefore we had to put into production the first completely equipped motor car ever offered in this country, nnd the dealers swamped us with orders wit bin twenty-four hours." "And. wha t is of even more vital In-lerest In-lerest to Salt leakers who admire a real 'snnriy' car." exclaimed GreenewaM. "Snort Marine is here we are showing-It showing-It now in our salesrooms, and the daily throng of enthusiastic admirers which surround Ibis beautiful new Jordan gives Hie best idea of the popularity that it- is k f bound to enjoy." |
