' ' Resolved, that the singlo tax on land shouM lie substituted In the United States lor all taxes, both state and local," lo-cal," was the question discussed, Colorado Colo-rado took the a.r f'irmativo of the subject and Utah the negative. The winners set forth certain flaws in tho present system of taxation, especially especial-ly in the general property tax, contending contend-ing that the poor man at present bears j an unjust burden. The negative ad- mitted that there were certain phases of the general property tax which were unjust, but argued that these points were not fundamental. It contended that certain other forms of taxation l should bo used, such as inheritance tax, income tax and licenses, all of which the affirmative would abolish. I It was the general opinion that the I decision turned on a point which was HtlvnnccA by the negative that a land ! tax in Nevada would not be sufficient to support the state or county govem- ments, since tho total value of the land j -was less than the yearly expenses. I There were conflicting authorities on ! the point. Tho national census report j seemed to show that tho land in Nevada was sufficiently valuable, whereas the ! state, report showed the contrary. Krank Evans was chairman at the debate. de-bate. D. B. Shields L. R. Martineau and tho Rev. John Malick were judges. Following tho debate the debaters wero entertained at the Utah grill by the members of the local chapter of Tau Kappa Alpha National Debating fraternity. |
