OYSTER dealers are warned by the United States pure food bureau that they must not permit the oysters to "drink," And the drink that has thus .been officially put uuder the ban for the oyster family is nothing more nor less than ordinary city water or any other old kind of water. Along during the holiday season the inspectors of the department discovered dis-covered iu some parts of the eouutry that some dealers Trere adding fresh Tvater to tho containers jn which they wore keeping oysters. Kpsult as follows: fol-lows: Four quarts of oysters plus one quart of fresh water, allowed to stand several hours, makes five quarts of oysters. Hence, when the dealers filled a. quart measure with oysters they wero cheating, the inspectors said. Lesal experts in tho department very quickiv discovered that such a practice prac-tice was against the pure food law. The ovsters were bein "adulterated'' with water. The Oyster Dealers ' association as-sociation of the l"nited States didn't liko the scheme, either, because it io-duced io-duced their sales, so they began cooperating co-operating with the department of agriculture ag-riculture to stop tho practice. Hence the oysters have "gone dry" as far as fresh water is concerned. Tho salt water, in which the oysters are ordinarily shipped, is not. tempting, and the oysrer ones nor increase as bulk when 'placed in salt water. Therefore There-fore oulv pure water is an adulterant in this ease. |
