Mr. VandeitilU, who, with Dr. David Javne Hill, former United States erabasi sador to Germany, was a speaker at the dinner, said Mayor Mttchel had advised him, as chairman of New York City's commute?, that the St. Louis conference had been decided upon by delegates to the National Security league meeting m Washington. , ' President Wilson bad been invited to attend the dinner here tonight, held in the Interest of preparedness. A telegram from the president said: x I wish I might be present to speaK of the imperative necessity of pressing; press-ing; forward in this matter. T think that the whole country realises that necessity and my own hope is that with the greatest sobriety of thought, hut with verv clear purpose, the influence in-fluence of all forward-looking men will be exerted in behalf of the temperate tem-perate and reasonable project now before congress. Both Mr. Vanderbllt and Dr. Hill, in their addresses, sounded notes of warning warn-ing against unpreparedness. |
