Show B. 1 0. BOYS FiEG.il DID BATTLE SPIflii Optimism Replaces Gloom at Provo ; Material Is Rounding to Form. Special to The Tribune. PUOVO, Jan. 22. At the beginning of this year's basketball sen.son the hopes of the R Y. C to turn out another championship cham-pionship team, which has almost become a matt er of Ik-hit. eenu-d to turn in every dirertinn to the vanishing point. U was rea liv.t-d that in order to- produce winners lilts year what was needed moat was experience. And this very thing was woefully lacking. Taylor. Chipmnn, Greenwood and Steed were- ail absent and nothing but inexperienced freshmen and high school boys could be expected to tnko , their places. True U waa that EgRert-Fon, EgRert-Fon, last year's center, a nd Hales, who guarded the opponents' basket with Tay-; Tay-; lor last season, were in school, but they were both seniors with heavy courses to den mi id attention. And, then, ro add to , it all, V.'&geii sen was chosen to represent the "V" In debate with l'tah, and, as a ! consequence, both these warriors bye been busying themselves In other by than locating the hoop. Coach Roberts, however, with his usual optimism, started the building of a brand new squad, and for tho last two weeks, with the official breaking up of the high school team which won t ho L. D. S. j league championship, it has been drill alone which has made up for the lack of experience. Roberts has had to construct the "Y" team out of high school material. McDonald, Raile and R. Fcgertsen ara all high school men and Simmon and Parker and Hales are freshmen with no I ti t t-M'collnglnte experience whatever The players and student body, therefore, there-fore, felt no surprise when they rend the opiimlstlc reports from the "north," 'nor did the-v call Into question predictions to the effect that the R Y. V. could not expect ex-pect to win again this year. Gradually, however, not wlthsta nding th dearth of enthusiasm, the "Y" team has been molding into shapei Never in the history of the school have men displayed niore grim dete mil nation to give a good account of themselves. They feel that this year of all years they are fighting for some tiling more than the traditions n nd glory of the B. Y. U. One thing is certain, cer-tain, unity and harmony of purpose characterize char-acterize the team this year. They know thev must work like a machine if they would winj for, with practically all of their old players back, most of whom ' have had three or four years' experience in college basketball, the . "Crimson" will he in a better condition than ever in their hietorv. And read,' the "Y" will he. With remarkable re-markable faeillty they have swamped everything they have met this- year, fcpringvllle and Pleasant Grove have been roundly beaten in friendly practice games. If Coach Roberts of the B. V: V. develops de-velops a team this year which lanfls the pennant he will have performed the unexpected. un-expected. If the " Y " boys lose it will he by close margins, and they will lose fighting fight-ing to the last. Altogether, things look brighter at Provo. and the faw po about with a knowing smile a.s If they had a surprise somewhere In fore for "someone." Optimism Is cert ai illy prevailing pre-vailing at the local institution. |
