Show DEBATING POPULAR " for isiira College Has Excellent Prospects Pros-pects and Students Are Enthusiastic in Work. The students of Westminster college 1 have become enthused hi debating this year and have entered teams in. the j Btate triangular debating league and ; in the Protestant Church league of Utah. ! The members of the teams and the coach, R. H. White, are working over- i time to get their arguments in work' i ing order, as the season proper opens the first of February. j A'ot the debating teams alone are en- ' thusiaetic for the school work, but the entire student body seems to be bubbling bub-bling over with enthusiasm, which is due to the last report of President K. W. Rcherd. j Dr. Ueherd points out the reasons why the students should be proud and why the school should be filled with hope for the future. Some of the things are the splendid eruiipment of the new domestic do-mestic science department, which is due , to the generosity of the Hughes Electric Elec-tric company and the Utah Power & Light company. The equipment is entirely en-tirely electric and is proving efficient, and economical. After its tryout aud an examination by the board of education edu-cation it was used as a model in three 1 or more of the public school buildings of Salt Lake. . The steadv growth of the commercial department 'is also a source of joy to the students and patrons of the colleger-toe number of new enrollments proving the quality of work and neceesi tating the purchase of additional furniture fur-niture and room. The starting of new classes and the nearness of the board, ing department being the chief causes for the new enrollments at this time. Students have also organized several basketball teams and thus far in the season have made an excellent showing. Coach P. Lloyd, having secured the excellent ex-cellent gvmiiasium of the Burlington Baptist church, is grinding the boys for all they are worth, in anticipation of a trip to' central and eastern Utah. The school hps also secured the services serv-ices of Miss Schenk of the loeal Young Women's Christian association, apd the gymnasium of the Y. JX. C. A, building, build-ing, for the use and training of the girls, who are making extensive plans for a successful basketball season. The fact that, with its limited funds the college will be able to make a creditahle showing is due to the promise prom-ise of the Protestant churches of Utah not to establish a competitive institution in this state, bnt to unite to make Salt Lake City and Westminster college the recipients of all their efforts. This, with the increased attendance over previous pre-vious years, shows great progress toward the aim of the college board to establish estab-lish a nioderate-sijed college, well equipped and comfortably endowed, making a specialty of developing a line of trained Christian leaders for the in-teroiountain in-teroiountain country. |
