NEW YOKK, Dec. 7 Experiments with the eight-hour day in the Cleveland Cleve-land yards of the Nickel Plate railroad increased individual efficiency of the switchmen more than In jer cent, according ac-cording to James D. Monihan, general yard ma.ster, testifying late today before be-fore the arbitration board in the controversy con-troversy .between the Switchmen 's union and thirteen railroads. The witness asserted, however, that the "speedinu up"' of the n.en during the trial was due lar?elv to their eagerness eager-ness to have an eight-hour day adopted permanently, and lie doubted if they would have kept up the race after the eight-hour day had been gained. Monihan testified that the eight-hour dav was discontinued, because he was ordered to stop it. without any reason having been given. He conceded an additional expense had been incurred. He said if time and a half were paid for overtime it would tempt the men to lag in their work and try "to get in all the overtime they could. The hearing will be continued tomorrow. |
