Show CITY SCHOOLS MUST GUARD IGIST FIE j New Ordinance Requires Installation In-stallation of Telephones or Alarm Boxes. Installation of either telephones or fire alarm boxes in all school buildings of the city for fire protection purposes is requiret I by an ordinance enacted yesterday by tiie city commission. Previously, the ordinance provision has been that buildings used tor public gatherings, accommodating as many as 400 persons, raut be provided, with' fire alarm boxes. The ordinance was so constructed, however, as not to make sure that school buildings were included under this provision. The new ordinance gives the city board of education option between alarm boxes and telephones. The question ques-tion of the advisability of having telephones installed in the school buildings build-ings has been one of much argument in the meetings of the board of education educa-tion at various times. Under the provisions pro-visions of the ordinance enacted yesterday yes-terday the board of education must pay the cost of equipment for fire alarm boxes and the city the cost of installation. instal-lation. The passing of the ordinance is an outgrowth of the agitation resulting from the burning of the Liberty school. While it is not argued that the presence of an alarm box or a telephone in the Liberty school building would have had a bearing on that case, the need of such protection was brought out in the discussion dis-cussion of the matter by the city commission, com-mission, Fire Chief .Bywater taking occasion oc-casion to call to the attention of the commission the lack of communication between the school buildings and the fire department. Chief Bywater said that, as between telephones and alarm boxes, he prefers the alarm boxes, for the reason that they never get excited and never make mistakes as to location of fires. |
