Show PRESIDENT WIDTSOE COMPLETES REPORT University Head Optimistic Concerning Future of Institution. President John A. Widtsoo of the University Uni-versity of Utah announced yesterday that the biennial report of the institution would be transmitted to the governor a week from tomorrow. The report contains con-tains the conclusions of the president and a resume of the work of each department. President Widtsoe, in his report, expresses ex-presses great faith In the future of the school. He requests greater freedom for the students in university affairn and presents pre-sents the needs of the institution in the way of more buildings and equipment. The president's report says: The present condition of the University Uni-versity of Utah is exceedingly encouraging. encour-aging. Ten years ago the university enrolled as resident students, of col-lege col-lege grade, 565 persons; today nearly 1 liino students of college grade are iu attendance on the university campus. j The hundreds of men and women who are taking extension work wiH double tiic above number. Probably, in proportion pro-portion to our population, more students stu-dents are doing college work In Utah than In any oilier state. Two months of careful study of the conditions prevailing at the University of Utah leads me to say to you in all seriousness that the promise of the university Is all that could possibly he desired. It has the support and the respect of the people. It has a large class eouipmen t so far fl-s provided. It has an intelligent, loyal ana optimistic opti-mistic student bony. It has a splen-didlv splen-didlv trained, willing, helpful and for ward-looking faculty. In view of the fact that possibly no. stiile university in the land is more economically administered. It seems to rue that we have the right to ask for the necessary tilings upon which depends de-pends our success in training for the highest service to the, state the great numbers of young people committed to our care. The part relating to the students follows: fol-lows: I would suggest that increasingly greater freedom be given the students, so hat they may be placed on their honor in nil important matters. The greater the freedom, within reason, that students are given, the belter will be their training for citizenship in a country whh'h is governed by its citizens. |
