Myton and Salt Lake members of the Republican Second Sec-ond congressional district committee emanated last night from Provo because the congressional convention is called to meet prior to instead of after Ihe Republican state convention Monday in Provo. Members of the Utah countv delegation delega-tion to the congressional district convention, con-vention, together with members of the Kcpublu-an city and county committee, met last night in Provo to protest against the holding of the congressional district convention Monday morning. It has been called by Chairman Mvton of the district committee to meet at 10 o'clock, an hour before the state convention con-vention opens. The discussion in the Provo meeting last night was to the effect that this was contrary to the agreement made with the Republican state committee and the First congressional district committee to hold both congressional district conventions after the state convention. con-vention. .The First congressional district dis-trict will convene after the state convention. con-vention. It was the sense of the meeting that an attempt be made Monday morning to force an adjournment of the congressional congress-ional district convention until after the state convention. Efforts will be made to enlist the Tooele and Davis countv delegations in this, as well as some of tho Salt Lako county members. It was stated that holding the district convention conven-tion so early-as 10 o'clock might preclude pre-clude many delegates coming from long distances from attending. The Utah county crowd promises a contest Monday Mon-day morning. Cummings Present. E. T. Jones, chairman of the Republican Repub-lican city committee of Provo, acted as chairman of the meeting of protest last night. H. L. Cummings of Salt Lake, secretary of the Republican state committee, com-mittee, was among those present. He said he had understood that both the First and Second congressional district committees had agreed to hold their conventions after the state convention. The state convention will elect four delegates at large and four alternates to the Republican national convention in Chicago. The congressional district conventions will each name two delegates dele-gates and two alternates to the national convention. The Republicans in Provo have arranged ar-ranged to hold the state convention in the Columbia theater, and one of the district conventions there afterward, and the other in the Princess theater, nearby. near-by. The Second congressional district is scheduled to convene in the Princess theater. The same delegates will serve in both the state and district conventions. conven-tions. There promises to be a considerable scramble for places on the delegation to Chicago. For delegates at large there are mentioned Governor William Spry. Senator Reed Smoot, Senator George Sutherland, W. S. McCornick, Mayor A. R. Heywood of Ogden and Colonel C. E. Loose of Provo, who recently resigned as chairman of the state committee. The rural delegations are also expected to have some candidates for places on the at-large delegation. Many Candidates. Fred W. Price, H. S. Joseph, Mrs. Margaret Zane Cherdron and Mrs. Clarissa Clar-issa Williams, all of Salt Lake county, are candidates for delegates from the Second congressional district. For that matter, they would not object to being delegates at large. In the First con- fressional district there are as candi-ates candi-ates for delegates Congressman Joseph Howell, William Glasmann of Ogden, J. A. Anderson, who has the Morgan county coun-ty delegation instructed for nim, and IsFeils Poulson of Sevier county. v The Salt Lake county delegation will leave for the convention on a special train over the Salt Lake Route at 7:30 o'clock tomorrow morning. The start will be made from the Union Pacific system station and stops will be made at Fourteenth South, Murray, Midvale, Sandy and Draper to pick up delegates. Thereafter the train will speed right through to Provo. Tho delegation will caucus in Provo on arrival. The Weber and Cache county delegations delega-tions will travel on a special over the Denver & Rio Grande. |
