Herman Harms, state chemist, and Wlllard Hansen, state dairy and food commissioner, wero given tho floor of the senate Wednesday morning to speak In behalf of the Badger bill, which. Increases In-creases the powers and duties of the stato dairy and food commissioner and makes more specific the definitions of various food adulterations. One clause In the bill provides that baking powder shall be labeled as to the nature of the alum it contains. Mr. Harms said that there were three kinds of alum used In baking powder. They are potassium alum, ammonium alum and sodium alum. Of these, he said, sodium alum was the cheapest grade and that baking powder companies had contended con-tended that It was not alum. He quoted several scientists on the subject. Senator Hyde, chairman of the committee , on public health, also spoke in favor of the bill. The bill, in addition to specifying more clearly than docs the present law the powers and duties of tho state food and dairy commissioner. Increases tho commissioner's com-missioner's salary from $1800 to $2000 per year. It passed the senate unanimously. Senators Enjoy Dinner.
