John Mitchell, former president of the United Mine Workers of America and recently chairman chair-man of tho trade agreement department of tho. National Civic Federation, today tnado public bis resignation of his office of-fice und membership in the latter. It was announced that President S'cth Low of the Civic Federation had accepted the resignation to take effect at the close of tho prosent month. Mr. Mitchell's severance of relations with tho Civic Federation follows the stand recently tnkon by the United Mine Workers of America .In declaring that any member of their organization accepting accept-ing a position with the National Civic Federation would thereby forfeit membership mem-bership In tho union. With this cholco piaccd before him, Mr. Mitchell decided to resign from the Civic Federation. His letter of resignation says In part: "At tho. recent International convention conven-tion of the United Mine Workers of America, an amendment, to the constitution constitu-tion of that organization wns adopted providing thnl any member of tho United Mine Workers of America accepting a position ns representative of the National Na-tional Civic Federation shall forfeit his membership In tho union. "It Is needless to say that I rogrct the action of the miners' convention, not so much that It requires mo to choose between tho two organizations as because be-cause of the unjust and gratuitous attack at-tack upon the National Civic Federation which. In addition to Us many other useful use-ful public activities, has stood consistently consist-ently as an advocate of righteous industrial indus-trial peace." President Low's acceptance of tho resignation res-ignation says in pnrt: "I greatly regrot tho action taken at tho International convention of the United Mine Workers of America which has constrained con-strained you to make this decision. Under Un-der the circumstances, however. I think the course you have taken is both natural nat-ural and proper. "On behalf of the National Civic Federation Fed-eration I therefore accept your resignation resigna-tion from the executive council and from the organization and release you from your contract as chairman of the trade agreement department of tho federation. All to take effect on March 31. 1011." |
