Show PRESIDENT TAFT IS mm zelaya Former Dictator of Nicaragua Accuses United States of AH Sorts of Things. NEW ORLEANS, March 1. In a sixteen-page pamphlet, entitled "Refutation of the Statement of President Taft," received re-ceived here today from Brussels, Jose Santos Zelaya, exiled former president of Nicaragua. Indulges in bitter denunciation denuncia-tion of President Taft nnd this government's govern-ment's policy of aggression in Latin-America. Latin-America. He brands President Taft as a Blan-dorcr, Blan-dorcr, accuses the United States government govern-ment of "having shamelessly aided the rebellion" in Nicaragua, of "having bought consciences" to further Its schemo of aggrandizemont, and warns Latin-Americans that the purpose of the Taft administration is to seize tho American Ameri-can republics. Zolaya's attack was called forth by what ho terms "unjust accusations, full of bitterness against me," contained in the president's annual message to congress con-gress in December In lhat message the president referred to Zelaya as "tho disturber of Central America," said the people of Nicaragua wero finally driven into rebellion by his lawless exactions, apd that Zelaya violated vio-lated the laws of warfaro by the "unwarranted "un-warranted execution of two Americans who had regularly enlisted in the ranks of tho revolutionists." Zelaya proceeds to discuss our "Interference" "Inter-ference" in Cuba, Santo Domingo and Panama, and declares that the conduct of the United States has given a solemn denial to tho Monroe doctrine. In place of the Monroe doctrine, he says, the United States government has adopted tho policy of "America for the Yankees." Referring to the recent Nicaraguan revolution, Zelaya says : 'Tho United States government shamelessly shame-lessly aided the rebellion: It look tho part of tho rebels against my government: govern-ment: II. bought consciences, promising the Intrigants to give them the country In return for concessions ruinous to the latter. "The battle was uncciual and my withdrawal with-drawal from power, of which President Taft gives a false explanation, only took place when I had acquired the convlc- ilon that it was Impossible to undo the web of treasons and villainies which the United States government had plotted for the misfortune of our unhappy country." |
